2008 Nascar Controversy Will it effect the Sport?
Posted by: | CommentsFrom: The Sporting News Mar 13, 2008 06:42 PM |
In this Winston Cup season we've had four races and a lot of verbiage from Tony Stewart, Jack Roush, and Toyota on several issues, and some are celebrating this outburst of verbiage because it somehow has brought the sport's "personality" back. The sport, according to Brian France, needed to "show more personalities."
So what has been the net gain for the sport from these eruptions? Some point to surprising spikes in TV ratings, notably for Vegas and Atlanta, as evidence that these outbursts are galvanizing fans back to the sport. Perhaps Tony Stewart and company screaming in the media has had some effect, but it's impossible to believe that it can sustain any improvement in the sport's popularity, especially given the continuing low quality of the competitive product on the racetrack.
Daytona was an exciting race. Fontana had some good racing in spots but hardly enough of it. Vegas wasn't much to write home about, and Atlanta wasn't any better - enough that it caused comment from H.A. Wheeler about the COT, "If this thing doesn't work, let's fix it and let's do it right now."
MD80891 remains a most perceptive analyst of things NASCAR and he has noted among other things what most people overlooked about the Atlanta weekend - the radical change in weather from day to day and its effect on setup. His comments remain must-reading when discussing the on-going tire controversy, for as critical of Goodyear as I am in a general sense, what it comes back to is the COT and its role in both tire issues and general raceability or lack thereof.
Just having "personalities" is not going to benefit the sport long-term. This sport would have seen similar spikes in ratings - not to mention stronger crowds than have generally come through track turnstiles - if the races following Daytona had shown the same competitive depth the 500 showed.

NASCAR Collecting – Why do you collect NASCAR Stuff?
Posted by: Driver | Comments (0)I always seem to get the question "why do you collect Nascar stuff?" and "what makes Nascar collecting so unique?".
So today I am going to answer just that question!
Nascar collecting is something more than just having a bunch of race cars around your room or house, it's about enjoying what you have and respecting it for what it is. Nascar diecast and other Nascar branded items are usually quite expensive. So as you might think it takes quite a lot of dedication to grow and expand ones collection to the size of their choice.

Nascar items range from just five dollars up to hundreds depending on the item and the rarity.
So what makes Nascar collecting so unique is the fact that you get what you pay for. Every Nascar item that I have purchased has been very sturdy and to the utmost quality that I would ever expect.
Nascar memorabilia is very rare in most cases with limited quantities of one item ever being made. This offers each collector the opportunity to own something unique just to themselves and to enjoy the satisfaction that only so many people have the same piece.
The uniqueness outshines any other sports collecting in my opinion because unlike baseball cards and such you can actually build or buy a nice glass cabinet and display your diecast and show it off to guests unlike with baseball cards and such where they would fade and loose value.

It is always special to have a Nascar stock car replica piece, and as years go on they are getting more and more detailed in ways such as actual moving parts, removable chassis and such.
The variety of memorabilia is always changing with new drivers and new areas to be explored such as diecast, clothing, stickers, children's toys and so on. This is what makes Nascar collecting so unique, the fact that we can enjoy our collection without jeopardizing its value and at the same time have fun with our favorite sport!
